June 21 in Lucha Libre History

AAA 6/21/98 in Mexico City:

This was held in the Deportivo Azcopatzalco, a famous mid 90's AAA TV location. Our unaired matches included:

Bat Blue & Century 2000 vs Hercules & Sanson: Bat Blue/Century 2000 were regular AAA 'C' show regulars likely getting a nice bonus to open up this show. No clue on their rudo opponents. Not the CMLL Sanson obviously.

Frisbee II/Full Contact/Virtual vs Espantapajaros/Quinto Dan/R-15: Yeah... the AAA undercard wasn't exactly full of bright spots in this time period. Some wacky as shit gimmicks though! Quinto Dan may actually be Quinto Elemento in which case Chessman is here but otherwise it's guys who just faded away although at one point R-15 was considered one of their top future rudos.

Latin Lover/Heavy Metal/Mascara Sagrada vs Abismo Negro/Kick Boxer/Killer

The two matches that did air were both good...

La Parkita vs Mini Abismo Negro (Mexican National Mini's Title): Man it's such a shame Mini Absimo Negro got phased out of AAA. That dude was legit one of the best mini rudos of all-time. Such an awesome worker. This was weeks after his MOTYC with Octagoncito. Didn't reach that level obviously but he showed his skill working with a far less talented mini who clearly had zero experience in singles matches. They had some nonsense going on with the seconds but match was generally clean with Abismo going over strong. Watching him suplex the shit out of the smaller tecnicos was always fun.

Blue Demon Jr./La Parka Jr./Mascara Sagrada Jr./Perro Aguayo Jr. vs Psicosis/Histeria/Mosco De La Merced/Maniaco: Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan I have such awesome memories of this first fall. Mostly for the chain of spots in a row at the end obviously. Sick fucking bump where Perro Jr. BACKDROPPED Mosco II from the APRON to the FLOOR! Flat back bump! He bounced! So gnarly. Then he took a double stomp off the apron! HOLY CHRIST! Maniaco then took Perrito out with a somersault off the apron. He got up right for the perfect ending to the sequence a Blue Demon Jr. tope near the ringpost to Maniaco's back........ except........ Demon's feet clipped the ropes and he came straight down on his head. NASTY AS HELL! He was clearly KO'ed & Maniaco wasn't at fault since he wasn't even supposed to catch. He was just a target that never got hit. Match obviously went off the rails afterwards as Demon got stretchered out. Rudos won an improvised brawl with the numbers edge. These are the memories I will never get out of my head until the day I die... haha.

Only 2 matches but TV episode was combined with the 6/30 Pachuca show which was really good so if you can find the TV show definitely pick it up!

AAA 6/21/00 in Tlalnepantla:

A very show 3 match (on TV) show with the women's trios edited out & no result known of the opener.

Psicosis/Histeria/Mosco De La Merced/Maniaco vs Los Porros (Angel o Demonio/Leon Rojo/Obett/Enrique El Salvaje): This was indeed the TV debut for the Porros. One of the cool things of course about the way AAA used to be was you would get the locals from the arenas they ran and with AAA running TV's on a smaller scale in 2000 they were in Arena Lopez Mateos here where the Porros were the top guys. Much thinner Porros too! Wouldn't even recognize them today. Not even sure what happened to Enrique El Salvaje to be honest. I remember Fredo Espardo was a big fan of them all though! Ask him! Vipers got the jump with a poorly filmed Psicosis dive over the ringpost onto all the Porros as they made their entrance. Porros got in a quadruple dive which was pretty cool. Match was otherwise built around brawling with weapons including baseball bats, chairs & a table eventually used for the run-in spot where Abismo Negro helped his Vipers win. Entertaining, if nothing else.

Mascara Sagrada/Mascara Sagrada Jr./Oscar Sevilla/Torero vs Charly Manson/May Flowers/Nygma/Espiritu: Where was Picudo? I can't even remember. He must have had a seperate match (the unlisted one?) because he got involved doing a run-in with fire to help his Vatos Locos win. This was a pretty weak match to be semi-main so we must be missing the actual semi-main and Picudo is at that level. Torero was barely a TV charachter by this point. Neither was Sagrada Jr. to be honest. There was a real cool spot though where Sagrada Jr. was vaulted into the air and landed on Mascara Sagrada's thighs as he sat on the top rope... then he got boosted into a moonsault bodyblock! Someone should steal that but make it look prettier. This was fun for what was shown but as usual with AAA TV in 2000... edited to all hell and we were still in the 2/3 falls era so it was basically finishes only.

Canek/Latin Lover/La Parka vs Cibernetico/Abismo Negro/Electro Shock: Now this is a standard AAA 2000 main event! If you've seen one, you've seen it all. Multiple run-ins playing off the rest of the night with Psicosis & Picudo getting involved. Parka did his comedy and the rest was edited to death.

A quick and painless AAA 2000 show but not exactly one you would be going out of your watch to watch as someone digging through history. Seeing the Porros was pretty cool for us regular viewers back at the time though.

CMLL 6/21/02

Unaired matches here included...

Sombra De Plata & Zeta vs La Flecha & Super Comando: Couple of clips made Momentos including an awesome surfboard/flying dropkick combo by the rudos & double dives from the tecnicos. Zeta remains one of the long lost lucha mysteries. Where did he go? Where did he even come from? Just a disillusioned CMLL youngster who saw the writing on the wall? But to leave lucha forever? That's rare. He seemed good. Even went to Japan with Mistico as one of the trains for Michinoku Pro. You'd think that alone would have kept him around.

Starman/Tigre Blanco/Tony Rivera vs Dr. X/Sangre Azteca/Valentin Mayo

What TV aired...

Gran Markus Jr./Mr. Mexico/Poder Boricua vs Bulldog/El Veneno/Violencia: A truly historic moment as Poder Boricua worked his last match under that name as the following week he would switch masks & change names to Poder Mexica. Actually, they burned the old mask but that's a story for a different day. This was just another in a long of god awful Boricuas matches. I mean... I did just say Poder Boricua used to be part of their group & feuding with Gran Markus Jr.... well... that sums everything up. Hard to even differentiate this stuff all the way 18 years later to be honest.

Negro Casas/Felino/Lizmark Jr. vs Ultimo Guerrero/Rey Bucanero/Tarzan Boy: The usual good match you would get from the Guerreros at this time. Sadly none of the tecnicos were interested in doing much so there's not much to point towards as a true highlight.

Atlantis/Black Warrior/Mr. Niebla vs Damian 666/Halloween/Juventud Guerrera: So the way the Familia de Tijuana worked... and smartly... was tours. They would show up for a few weeks, then disappear. Stay fresh, stay a draw. Nicho would follow in future weeks. Never Rey Misterio Sr. though. Lady Victoria was around though! Juvy was here with his wild dreadlocks that were half blonde. This match was to establish the FdT guys right away getting a win over the trios champs but the goal was to setup a bigger angle the following week. They looked good here. Match kinda went off the rails a bit when Juventud was trying the Hardyz spot into the corner but caught Atlantis legit with his leg knocking the tecnico a bit loopy. It was super entertaining to watch the FdT guys bumping all over for Niebla & Warrior. They were total pros & over with the Arena Mexico crowd.

Main is worth watching. Not much else here.

CMLL 6/21/11:

Unaired match was Camaleon & Horuz vs Bronco & Ramstein... a very appropriate opening match.

Angel Azteca Jr./Pegasso/Rey Cometa vs Hooligan/Nitro/Skandalo: Tuereg B-Team! What a Tuesday lineup! Very standard match with the tecnicos each getting their one big exchange each & both Pegasso/Cometa getting to do big dives. All leading up to them of course losing & Skandalo getting the win with a package piledriver on Pegasso. The fun thing about these matches used to be watching the tecnico stretches & that they had a chance to win. Two key things missing from CMLL segundas these days with much less talented rudos who constantly win because it's booked by old segunda rudos.

Blue Panther/Fuego/Sangre Azteca vs Dr. X/Efesto/Felino: Fuego & Dr. X belong more in that previous segunda but a combo of them feuding & a singles title match meant they got mixed in with the bigger names. They were the focus here and of course it went straight falls with Dr. X yanking Fuego's mask for the DQ. I think it's not too long after this the feud comes to a screeching halt. Match is also worth watching to see Sangre Azteca try to be a tecnico. What a total fucking disaster. When Efesto has more spectacular offense than you...

Hijo Del Fantasma vs Rey Bucanero (NWA Light Heavyweight Title): Finals of a 3 week tournment with each guy winning a torneo. This is the type of match Bucanero can still have to this very day. He can come through with that one big match against a tecnico who can do the majority of the hard work and all Bucanero has to do is chime in once in a while with a big bump or two along with catching dives. He was great here. Always in the right spot and made Fantasma look super. This match also has the historic moment of the FIRST TIME (that I remember at least) where Fantasma busts out the tope to each side of the ring which was a cool spot until it started to be copied in every match. I think something like that would get over HUGE in the U.S. if done properly at the right moment. These were real topes by the way, not Seth Rollins pinky in the air topes. I guess the only difference between this and a 2020 Bucanero match is Bucanero actually won here! I know! WTF? Well, Fantasma sadly was not a priority at this point as the dropped feud with Mephisto earlier in the year suggested. He had already got his big win for a title back in 2009 vs Averno so the ofifce was done with him. Bucanero hit the Buca Storm and took the title. Very good match.

Angel De Oro/La Sombra/Strong Man vs Mr. Niebla/Rey Escorpion/Shinsuke Nakamura: TUESDAY NIGHT NAKAMURA! 100% more effort than current Friday Night Nakamura! He worked with all 3 tecnicos and was having a blast. Sombra did not hold back on his tope suicida! Escorpion looked great carrying Angel De Oro & basing for Sombra. Strong Man did his thing. He wasn't great technically but he was a one of a kind act which was entertaining to watch when he wasn't busy ruining actually good looking matches. Tecnicos went over clean in a fun one.

A show worth checking out in someone's mystery archive one day. Title match especially but you know the main event is worth a watch to see Nakamura when he gave a shit.

CMLL 6/21/13:

Sensei & Soberano Jr. vs Apocalipsis & Akuma: The perfect mix of past & present at the time! Soberano Jr. & Akuma were two very exciting youngsters we didn't get to see much of & were clearly very motivated and happy to be working a Friday opener. The other two... not so much. They had their routines down and knew their spots in the pecking order so this was just another day. Soberano showed off some real cool stuff. He was sooooooooooooooo skinny. I'm not one for judging anyone for being skinny but he was definitely someone who needed a little more weight if he was ever gonna get a shot in the company. Tecnicos went over in a fun little match.

Dark Angel/Marcela/Dalys vs La Amapola/La Seductora/Princesa Blanca: To be honest not a bad little match. They had standards still here with the women's division. Blanca was working really hard with her (in-law) Dalys. They had one especially funny exchange where Blanca was clearly leading Dalys through the motions as Dalys froze at least twice but Blanca just moved her into the next right position and was doing roll-ups FOR HER. LOL Dark Angel/Amapola did some cool stuff & Sarah went over with a Reinera at the end.

Diamante/Rey Cometa/Triton vs Psicosis/Olimpico/Niebla Roja: Wacky teams to look back on. Not sure what Roja was doing with these Invasores! Perhaps a CMLL spy??? I'm kidding. Nobody cared about the invaders at this point. Tecnicos were Diamante running out the clock on his time in this promotion & two criminally underrated guys. This was another fun match with everyone working hard. I loved the spot where Psicosis went for his slide through the ropes spot but Diamante just grabbed him and held him for Triton's springboard legdrop as Psicosis hung there. A smart way of setting up an absurd spot! Triton did a lot of pulling up his pants in between hitting some nice springboard spots. Rey Cometa busted out a rare Brillo Cometa although it was far from his best one ever and Niebla Roja saved him by leaping forward to catch. Niebla Roja actually busted out his great move only done once or twice that someone should totally steal where he does the old Generico arms-through-the-legs spot into a suplex but instead of the suplex he just dropped Cometa back down into a knee like a crazy GTS variation. Killer looking move. Rudos got the win. 3 for 3 match quality wise so far!

The next two matches were Fuego vs Vangelis & Stuka Jr. vs Valiente in En Busca De Un Idolo round robin matches. Highlights are in the music video but......... the matches were airing on the Fox Sports TV broadcast of the reality show which wasn't recorded or uploaded to the website so we were SOL except for CMLL.com quick HD highlights. Maybe this is the kind of thing they could dig up from their archives during this coronavirus shutdown? All these guys are allowable in videos.

Rush/Super Porky/Blue Panther vs Averno/Negro Casas/Rey Escorpion: Oh my god such an amazing time period here with Rush just starting to figure it all out & Negro Casas being his perfect foil. Tons of heat for their striking exchanges where Rush would brutalize Negro & Negro would give it right back. Escorpion was also a wildcard here because he was an awesome rudo too and had just as good exchanges with Rush but he wasn't the focus. There was actually a funny moment where Escorpion tried to pick a fight with Ultimo Guerrero who was guest announcer for the TV show and Guerrero just completely blew him off which was a very Guerrero thing to do. The other thing going on here was the Panther/Averno feud kicking off which eventually led to the hair match at the Anniversary Show. One of my constant fears actually almost happened here... Panther hiptossed Averno to the floor and went for a tope. As he was gearing up, Averno slipped on the floor! Luckily he recovered super quickly & still made a perfect catch. But I constantly have fear of guys slipping before catching dives. Always flash back to the famous Safari/Mephisto moment with the camera cord from 2002. Finish was Panther submitting Averno with his awesome spinning armdrag into the leg submission around the neck. Love that spot! Lots of post-match mic challenges with the best being Rush burying Negro who just taunted him and it made Rush so angry. AWESOME CMLL TIME PERIOD HERE!

La Sombra/Maximo/Shocker vs Volador Jr./Mr. Aguila/Terrible: THE AWESOMENESS ROLLS ON! Forget the other four guys. They were just bit players. This was all about LA SOMBRA VS VOLADOR JR.! But... Sombra peaking in 2013 having just won the NJPW IC Title & Volador Jr. aka the best wrestler in the world at this point. The first thing you'll notice (besides Volador attacking Sombra during his entrance) is Volador Jr.'s awesome tongue out Venom style mask! AMAZING! He destroyed Sombra including ripping up his tights. He even managed to dislodge the door on the barricade at ringside so he could lay it down and power bomb Sombra onto it! That's a suspension in 2020 unless you are LA Park! Everything Volador did was just picture perfect crisp. It was incredible. Dude was a fucking machine. Sombra made a hot comeback in the second fall including doing the rarely seen old TAKA Michinoku reverse positions springboard moonsault plancha! But the best was obviously saved for the finish where these two went through one of the most amazing finishing sequences you will ever see! Duck down... shoulderblock... springboard off second rope onto shoulders caught into Croyt's Wrath... countered with full flip onto feet... roll-up by Sombra... roll through by Volador... double knees sends Sombra into buckles... VOLADOR SPIRAL! 1, 2, 3! FUCKING AMAZING! Volador Jr. then climbs the ropes & taunts the crowd by wanking off. LOL Just beautiful. This of course set up their IC Title match the following week.

An awesome show. CMLL was red hot around this time. Not a bad match to be had on this show and imagine if we even had the En Busca matches available in full! Everything was building in June leading to the crazy June 28 show. An awesome time period for Arena Mexico.

AAA 6/10/95 'Triplemania III-A' in Orizaba:

Not the most fondly remembered Triplemania by any stretch of the imagination. Of the three in '95 this is definitely the weakest on paper. Drew a big crowd because AAA was hot but the main event was just a hotshot special attraction match with barely used charachters (at least on TV) & lots of star power was missing from the show.

Never seen matches included a women's trios (keep it hidden forever!) & Dragon De Oro/Mexicano/Toreo vs Signo/Negro Navarro/El Misionero (Black Power?). Those rudos were around because we were in the midst of the AAA/UWA Double Power agreement. The UWA barely existed so this was just playing nice to have Canek headline some shows. A nice reminder that AAA was always about total randomness on Triplemania shows & this isn't just a new age thing.

Los Villanos vs Los Payasos: These teams feuded on TV around this time so this was a logical match for a big show even with no stip or titles on the line. Lots of mask ripping & cheating with both being rudo teams. Got a little sloppy at various points & the finish was ludicrious as all hell with one of the Payasos losing his mask only to have the previously unmasked Villano put his mask on the Payaso who then got DQ'ed because the ref thought he was a Villano (the clown outfit didn't give anything away?). Just a way for the feud to continue. These teams had better matches.

Latin Lover/Lizmark/Tinieblas Jr. vs Killer/Scorpio Jr./Shu El Guerrero: More Double Power nonsense here with the entire rudo team being UWA representatives. Really needed Tinieblas Sr. here with Alushe to make this watchable because the Jr. never brought anything except being taller than the average luchador. Killer/Andy Barrow did their trademark miscommunication bumps which is always fun to watch. The rudos went over in a very dull match otherwise. This is where you could have had a killer midcard Rey Jr. & friends match.

Angel Mortal & Super Calo vs Winners & Marabunta: These guys had signed for an ultimate loser match at the Triplemania events. Basically one guy would be left standing at the end still masked. So the losers of this match would immediatly have a mask match & the winners would have theirs on the next Triplemania. Then the two winners would face each other at the final Triplemania. Very cool concept & the match had been building for a while but for whatever the reason the heat just wasn't there as you'd expect. I don't know what it was... could just be a random crowd that night hadn't seen a good show thus far and was waiting for the real stars thing or could even be the TV didn't catch the real energy of the people there live. But the tag portion was really disappointing and lacked any sort of who would move on drama.

Angel Mortal vs Super Calo (Mask vs Mask): This had the mask ripping & blood which perked the crowd up a bit but still it didn't have big mask match energy. For the biggest match of his career Calo wasn't really going crazy or doing any of the trademark stuff one would expect. It really came off like an uninterested performance. Okay nearfalls but again a lack of crowd reaction took away from everything. Calo got the win which got a pop since he was the tecnico and Angel Mortal reluctantly unmasked (actually Calo snatched it off him after much stalling). I walked away very let down.

Konnan/Perro Aguayo/Octagon/La Parka vs Cien Caras/Mascara Ano 2000/Universo 2000/Jerry Estrada: Special attraction one fall relevos atomicos match. Multiple storylines here with the main one being Perro Aguayo Jr. showing up for the first time to accompany his dad to the ring. Naturally Fuerza Guerrera just happened to be at ringside supporting the rudos (maybe he was supposed to be in this match but someone no-showed?) and the two got into it with Fuerza largely pushing around the kid and treating him like a nobody. The other storyline was Mascara Ano 2000 hiding a Pepsi bottle all match and waiting to hit Perro with it again but when he went to do it Perro moved & he hit his own brother (the bottle did not break). This led to the tecnico victory. Easily the match the crowd was most into on the night but hardly anything that would be deserving of semi-main event Triplemania status.

Mini's Cage Match: About as special attraction randomness as you can get. The first ever time mini's were in a cage for this type of match and since it was a cage it had to go on last. But it was weird seeing this as the main event of a Triplemania with guys like Mini Calo, Torerito & Ninjita involved who had combined MAYBE 4 or 5 AAA TV matches up until that point. The only reason big names involved were Mascarita Sagrada & Espectrito II (since Espectrito I had already lost his mask). Not to mention you had other mini gimmicks that had made TV missing in action which seemed to make no sense. But they made the best of it and had a decently entertaining cage match. Lost a little steam when Mascarita Sagrada escaped but Super Munequito had some support. The cage seemed to be on the verge of breaking at one point. It came down to Munequito and Coquito Rojo with the tecnico mangaing to escape first (Tirantito was in the ring calling things!). The little red clown unmasked confusingly as Piratita Morgan which surely had to annoy the commision and folks who recognized him as who he clearly was. But the Payasitos had been around a good 7-8 months leading up to this so it's not like they took on the gimmick just for one night. And he did do TV shots after this as unmasked Coquito Rojo so I was okay with it.

CMLL 6/10/05:

Our unaired matches included:

Sombra De Plata/Zeta vs Artillero/Super Comando
Maximo/Texano Jr. vs Hooligan/Loco Max

Reyes Del Aire: The first! Still holds up as one of the best! Just presented as one of CMLL's random torneos. Nobody knew it was happening until cards came out for the week and the participants just seemed to be guys who were gonna be booked for matches as it was had it been a normal 5 or 6 match show. Clearly wasn't chosen for the best flyers or you would have most certainly had to have Mistico involved or even a guy like Zeta in this over Leono for example. But you can't argue too much with the participants as they balanced it out with flyers & bases from the group of guys they were willing to include at this level on the Friday show. Breaking down each participant...

- Alan Stone: Coming off being pushed strong to end 2004 he just became another midcard guy seemingly heading nowhere. Looked good here, did some near stuff. Also had the one screw-up of the match with a double springboard moonsault gone wrong. Left for AAA by end of the year.

- Virus: Considered one of the best wrestlers in the company so had to include him in this heavy workrate match obviously. Was able to do a little flying & base. Had a great exchange with Volador Jr. but was never in serious contention to win.

- Leono: Definitely the lowest ranked guy in the match so you knew the company was high on him to let him get involved. Honestly didn't have a bad showing at all. Bases helped him out & he got some shine before exiting early. Ended up moving higher on cards after this.

- Ricky Marvin: World class. Was doing a heavy Japan schedule and only showing up in Mexico between tours. Was never gonna get anywhere in CMLL but it was steady work and he was still loyal. He was a cut above everyone else involved (even Virus) & got to work with many different guys. You can even see his touches on many other eliminations during the match and the genius Spanish Fly spot where Volador immediatly superkicked him to steal the pin. Finishing stretch with Volador was great.

- Tigre Metalico: Second lowest guy on the totem pole also made a good showing for himself. Worked a lot with Misterioso as they had good chemistry. Took a nasty fall on a flying tope to the floor early on. Crazy to think how his career went from this to a nasty un-cooperative rudo in 10 years time & now a poorly trained referee.

- Tigre Blanco: Similar to Metalico's position but he was the far better of the two. Had the best sequence of the match early on with Volador Jr. leading to a big Volador dive. Got an early elimination but then went out quickly so he was never a real factor but I remember everyone happy ot see him since he had largely been invisible on TV but everyone knew he was a great worker from his CMLL Japan stuff.

- Misterioso II: Really shined here as a base for others. Always fun to look back on how good he was and how he became the prototype of a guy who realized he was never going anywhere in CMLL and decided the best approach was just to literally make being lazy your gimmick to get through the weekly routine.

- Stuka Jr.: Another lowly ranked guy but more spectacular than the others mentioned. This was exactly the type of match for him to stick out and make a name for himself. He did okay but he had such limited time it just didn't happen. Things worked out great for him in the long run but it did take a couple of years to get going.

- La Mascara: Everyone knew he was in line for moving up on the cards so it wouldn't have been a shock to see him win this one (he did win the 2006 version) even if it would have left a sour taste in our mouths since he isn't really a flyer at all. Most of what he did here was him being carried by better bases.

- Volador Jr.: The deserving winner. Ricky had the natural talent but Volador Jr. was the star of the match (clearly what they had planned putting it together). He got tons of big spots, two big dives & the big counter at the end to setup his roll-up finish on Ricky. He also based great for Virus mid-match. A big deserving win for a guy moving up on cards.

- Atlantis/Blue Panther/Gronda XXX vs Olimpico/Rey Bucanero/Pierroth Jr.: You know how this goes. Gronda was in his 2nd week of working Friday nights for a short run so this was just him no-selling the rudos and beating them down. Poor Pierroth's body was so broken at this point and he still had to take bumps for the useless roided up dude. The other four carried the work portion of the match obviously & Monito was around to add in some humor. At one point Bucanero picked up Monito and flung him onto fans in the first row. Back in the days when the front row regulars were known to the wrestlers so they had full trust these guys wouldn't drop Monito or hurt him in any way unlike now where you don't dare try anything with that and drunk tourists.

- Heavy Metal/Negro Casas/Mascara Magica/Universo 2000 vs Damian 666/Halloween/Hector Garza/Perro Aguayo Jr.: A rare atomicos main event! This was to keep building to the cage match the following week. Yes, the super weird 9 person cage match. Why couldn't you find someone extra to make it an even 5 on 5? I apologize but only CMLL can explain that one to you. Decent match but missing something (Hint: Mistico) to have the crowd as fully invested as you'd expect one week before a major show. I wonder if Mistico was supposed to be in the Reyes Del Aire but then someone realized he couldn't work midcard and that match was certainly not going to main event so they scrapped him? It's a notable missing guy for one week leading into a major show he is co-headlining. Match was fine.

Overall a must-see match but not show. If you've ever seen the Reyes Del Aire you definitely gotta go out of your way to watch it. I have it up there with the 2008 version as the best Reyes Del Aire matches ever.

AAA 6/10/07 in Merida:

Part of the usual double shot weekend with a show two days earlier in Cozumel. But these were not vacation shows at all as everyone was working hard and Triplemania was fast approaching!

Cynthia Moreno/Estrellita vs Ayako Hamada/Angel Williams: Angel is who we know these days as the awful Angelina Love. She was no better back here. Totally the wrong type of person to have come to do shots in AAA and yet... she was. I could rant but why bother. This same mistake would only be made for the next 10+ years. Pretty bad match with the only saving grace being a couple of Cynthia/Ayako sequences. At least nobody almost paralyzed themselves like the match two days earlier...

Laredo Kid & Sexy Star vs Gran Apache & Fabi Apache: Pre-match had a skit with Sexy Star/Fabi Apache brawling in a pool for the generic wet t-shirt imagery. This was peak Fabi being super hot so I approved. Sexy Star's body has changed! A lot! Total credit to her for even working this show though... it was two days earlier when she did a plancha and thanks to Estrellita/Angel Williams being brain dead usless sacks of shit Sexy came down face first & bent her back at a disgustingly sick angle. To this day I watch it and still can't believe she didn't break her back on the spot. Not only did she still work here but the match was really good and she did a lot! Gran Apache had a spot at this time where he groped all his female opponents and it got a tecnico pop! LOL Ah 2020, you have no humor. But with some of the stories you hear about Apache maybe that's not a joke to make. Either way... he based well for the tecnicos as did Fabi who was not only at her peak hotness but also her peak in-ring in my mind. Super Fly ended up doing a run-in to help the tecnicos win with the Triplemania mask match looming involving this crew.

Crazy Boy/Joe Lider/Extreme Tiger/Juventud Guerrera vs Psicosis/Cuervo/Escoria/Espiritu: Weird atomicos match with Juventud working hurt (literally he was taped together like a mummy) & Psicosis in for Ozz who normally rounded out the Secta team. Lots of chairs involved. Extreme Tiger did his 450 to the floor and completely undershot it which seemed to hurt him. Espiritu must have been happy because usually it's the one taking it who gets hurt. Mexican Powers did their usual creative offense, some of it more absurd than usual. Finish saw the long delay as they setup chairs with lighttubes just so Crazy Boy & Joe Lider could fall through them. None of this match format is any surprise to anyone who was watching AAA at the time. Either you were okay with this or this was the most annoying this on shows because it was such an opposite from what the general AAA fans came to see.

Latin Lover/El Zorro/El Alebrije/Oriental vs Alan Stone/Scorpio Jr./Super Calo/Zumbido: Now THIS is what the general AAA fans, especially here in the tourist town, came to see. They even did the pre-match bit where Latin Lover strips for female fans in the ring and the rudos attack him mid-grinding. Super fun match with the tecnicos making fools out of the rudos who were all in rare form bumping all over the place. Oriental being involved meant some Oriental/Zumbido exchanges which were still fire stuff to watch back in 2007. Poor Zorro crashed HARD on a running somersault dive with the usual culprit Alan Stone nowhere to be found on the catch. Oriental did a wicked tornillo over the ringpost. Latin Lover went over Scorpio Jr. to make everyone (except Guapito) happy. Best match on the show.

Cibernetico/La Parka/Chessman vs Mesias/Ozz/Kenzo Suzuki: Triplemania build with these guys positioned for the Domo de la Muerte match. Konnan & all of La Secta got involved as you'd expect. Aside from a short burst of energy from Chessman it was all rudos. They went over and then beat down all the tecnicos. Show ended with the group of rudos raising their hands and Konnan standing dead center. Some things never change in AAA!

Overall a reasonably good show for the tourist town. Segunda & semi-main are both very good watches.

CMLL 6/10/08:

Missing match is actually the SEGUNDA! Lady Apache/Marcela/Sahori vs Mima Shimoda/La Medusa/Hiroka. Yes, they skipped a women's match in order of what usually airs to instead show a mini's opener! And you wonder why we used to love Cadena Tres???

Ultimo Dragoncito/Pequeno Ninja/Mini Maximo vs Pierrothito/Pequeno Violencia/Pequeno Warrior: A very run-of-the-mill match for this crew. I'm sure it was a million times better than what the women were offering up so no complaints it aired but just pointing out I don't think this was a case of the producers deciding this was a must-see match for TV viewers. Mini Maximo is always hilarious to watch. Dragoncito carried things on his side and even did his flip tope but to the safe side so he landed on the first row seats after everyone had moved. Rudos went over.

Fabian El Gitano/Leono/Mictlan vs Nitro/Bronco/Virus: GAH! What an ugly looking tecnico side. Naturally it led to an ugly match! Nitro was no mood for this nonsense and Virus always has a tough spot in matches like this because the way he works does not gel with the way those sloppy tecnicos do. Leono did a twisting dive that Nitro just casually watched him pass over on. That was nice. Proving there is no justice in this world the tecnicos went over. Waste of a midcard Tuesday match.

Felino/Heavy Metal/Hijo Del Fantasma vs Satanico/Black Warrior/Sangre Azteca: Another nothing happening match. Fantasma and Azteca did some fun stuff but the others were here just to pass through another dreary Tuesday night. Fantasma did bust out his crazy springboard swinging DDT on the apron with Azteca on the receiving end. Tecnicos went over.

La Sombra/Volador Jr./La Mascara vs Averno/Mephisto/Efesto: Mistico came out before the match (in an ugggggggggggly shirt) to show off the hand injury he had suffered which caused him to be replaced in this match (I think by La Mascara). Too bad because otherwise this could have been even better than it was. The usual very good match with the tecnicos looking great and the rudos doing their job like professionals. I will always have time for matches like this. Crowd was really into it.

Overall not a super thrilling Tuesday show. Very much something just for the CMLL hardcores to sit through.

CMLL 6/10/11:

Non-TV match was Astral/Electrico vs Demus/Pierrothito. A shame since at this time those two teams would have been having cool kick-ass matches.

Stuka Jr. vs Virus: Lightning match with two guys who are pros and know what to do. Good stuff as you'd expect. Virus submitted Stuka for the win. Worth checking out.

The next two matches were part of the on-going round robin Forjando un Idolo tournament where the coaches were now teaming with their participants who made the final 8 (Angel de Oro had already won the actual tournament over Polvora).

Blue Panther/Fuego/Polvora vs Atlantis/Delta/Guerrero Maya Jr.: Super match! Everyone shined. Got to see Maya work the mat with Panther, Fuego/Maya have cool exchanges, Polvora carry Delta, etc. Even Atlantis seemed to be a little extra motivated working with the youngsters and having Panther there to try and one-up. Really LOVED the finish with Atlantis getting Panther in the Atlantida but Maya had just taken Delta out with a dive by accident so both Fuego/Polvora could slide in easily to break up the submission and immediatly roll-up/pin Atlantis for the surprise win. Really smart booking which makes me think this was a Blue Panther tournament/finish.

Negro Casas/Diamante/Hijo Del Signo vs Ultimo Guerrero/Angel De Oro/Rey Escorpion: These teams seem unfair! LOL Even back here Signo stood out as a guy who just wasn't good at all and in way over his head. His partners were basically holding his hand through the double and triple team spots. Guerrero's team looked like killers. I know, you're stunned UG ended up with the best team including the guy who won the tournament itself. This wasn't as good as the previous match but held up because of the hard work from all involved as clearly it was an ego thing to present yourself the best way possible.

Maximo/Toscano/Valiente vs Mr. Niebla/Felino/Efesto: Just a totally random nothing going on match to fill out the show. Poor Valiente does his Valiente Especial picture perfectly in the first fall and then of all things he takes a nasty header on a tope suicida in the next fall. This was partially on Niebla though as he was clearly not paying attention and Valiente had to change his trajectory which through off his timing causing him to crash hard near the ringpost. Niebla was having one of his nights, what can you say? So with Valiente out of action the third fall was a steamroll for the rudos. Crowd was at least entertained by Niebla's antics.

La Mascara/La Sombra/Rush vs Averno/Mephisto/Shinsuke Nakamura: One week before their mask match so all the focus was on Mascara/Averno. Averno did the usual CMLL deal where someone who looks like him makes an entrance but it was Efesto just so Averno could jump La Mascara from behind. I can't even count how many times CMLL has resorted to this. Nakamura was having the time of his life here doing triple team moves & practicing his moonwalking. Really if you are a Nakamura fan and have not watched his CMLL work you are missing a gigantic piece of his career since this is where he put it all together. It was fun watching Sombra/Rush working with Nakamura a couple years before the matches they had that people remember more famously. This was also the 3M era so advertisements everywhere including on the wrestlers! No shirts off pops! Finish had a double dive from the future Ingobernables and as I type that I realize La Mascara was an Ingobernable too and laugh that I forgot. He put Averno in La Campana but Efesto ran in for the DQ. The point being nobody would be there to save Averno in one week. Except Tony Rivera who tried his hardest!

Overall a very fun Friday night with the Forjando trios matches carrying the work & a hot main event with special guest star around to add to the selling point of going back to watch this.

May 16 & 17 in Lucha History

AAA 5/17/95 @ Tlalnepantla:

Not sure where this was filmed because looks like a bullring setup so definitely not Arena Lopez Mateos which was never a good TV location anyways. Only 2 matches ended up making TV from this taping with the only other known match taking place being a Konnan vs Cien Caras match that the Observer describes as horrible. I can only imagine! Glad they skipped that one or it just aired on the Mexican stations.

El Charro/El Mariachi/El Mexicano vs Jerry Estrada/Heavy Metal/Picudo: Well so much for the rockers trio! And welcome to Heavy Metal turn #18! He had problems with his team all match long and they lost when he accidentally gave Picudo a spinning backbreaker and got attacked leading to roll-ups from the tecnicos. Match was the usual affair with the tecnicos looking good and the veteran rudos bumping all over for them. No complaints when you can get a good match for the short while until the angle happens instead of the angle dominating things and ruining what could be a good match.

El Hijo Del Santo/Octagon/Winners vs Fuerza Guerrera/Pentagon/Psicosis: Santo/Psicosis continued their feud here, as did Octagon/Fuerza which left... WINNERS vs PENTAGON??? Sure! Winners got bloodied up and in the strangest of booking decisions he actually submitted Pentagon (3rd TV match!) clean. I guess it's not a huge deal worth laughing at because the idea was to have Winners strong going into his mask matches next month so this kind of established him as a guy who can mix it up with the main event crew. Solid match as you'd expect. In the third fall Santo went for his tope atomico to the floor on Psicosis but I guess didn't have the right momentum to flip so he just fell right onto poor Psicosis who took it like a man! As always!

And that's that from this taping.

AAA 5/16/98 @ Torreon & 5/17/98 @ Durango:

So this was pretty much the norm for AAA back in the days before one venue = one taping. They would take the crew north, south, west, east, wherever and to make the trip worth it you would get two TV tapings with basically the same matches. Sometimes even 3 tapings. This created a nice backlog if they needed it or they could just air the better of the matches from the tapings. For example the Cadets faced the Vatos Locos one night & the Armas Mortales the following night with the leftover team getting the Chiva/Oscar Sevilla duo complete with Space Cadet fill-in and/or local to replace I assume the missing Chiva.

From Torreon we missed out on Cadets vs Armas Mortales & Sevilla/Ludxor/Chiva I/Murcielago vs Vatos Locos.

Heavy Metal vs Kick Boxer: These guys had every type of stip match you can imagine over the course of their AAA feud. Boxing... kick boxing... pseudo MMA... dog collar... you name it. This one was just a regular one fall match just to advance the angle with Pepe Casas & Tirantes getting into it with each other so the match was thrown out. Not good.

Latin Lover/La Parka Jr./Octagon/Canek vs Cibernetico/Electro Shock/El Sanguinario/Killer: Sanguinario! I forgot he was still even around at this point. Had to be one of his final appearences. These are the type of matches that make people drive home the point why they gave up on AAA during this time period and to be honest it's hard to blame them. Just really bad brawling & even the tecnicos weren't exactly lighting it on fire when it was their time to shine. Really poor depth on top here to balance out the top tecnicos they had. Just a complete waste of time brawling match.

Mascara Sagrada vs Sangre Chicana (Mexican National Light Heavyweight Title): There was no specific reason for this... it just happened. My assumption is Chicana asked for it since it was in his hometown. So Pena gave him a title defense against a decent enough worker (I believe this was Alebrije/Kraneo era Mascara Sagrada). Okay match but only that. Chicana was way done by this point unless you were just marking out for him throwing his punch. A singles match was the last thing he needed to be doing unless it was a total brawl and they tried to work this serious style which never works for an AAA audience. Chicana kept his belt obviously.

From Durango we basically got the flip flop so all the lower card stuff. Basically the atomicos was minus a guy on each side who joined Heavy Metal/Sagrada & Kick Boxer/Chicana in a trios. I'm okay missing those matches.

Chiva Rayada I/Oscar Sevilla/Murcielago vs Armas Mortales (Cuerno De Chivo/M-357/R-15): For those who don't remember the Armas Mortales were basically named after different guns. I'm trying to remember if they had a 4th guy but it's not coming to me. Cuerno was a real good underneath young guy. R-15 too. He had actually started out in AAA around the time of Mosco/X-Fly back in mid-96. M-357/Magnum was a very young Chessman who was already showing worlds of potential and had the size that you knew he wouldn't be long for these undercard matches once they found a new gimmick for him. Not sure on Murcielago. Best guess is a local filling in for wherever Chiva II had disappeared to. Wonder why they didn't just put Murcielago in a Chiva outfit? Pretty average match by AAA underneath standards with the only fun stuff being work between Sevilla/M-357. Murcielago was not ready for this spot and had multiple screw-ups. Cuerno was trying his best to help out but you can only do so much. Tecs took the win.

Space Cadets (Venum II/Ludxor/Discovery/Super Nova II) vs Vatos Locos (Charly Manson/May Flowers/Nygma/Picudo): The era of AAA having a million atomicos teams! Pretty fun concept actually but hurt by lack of depth. This era Cadets was the shits. Venum II (Princesa Sugeith's husband!) was just... no. No. No. No. Shameful they'd give that name. He was literally the worst flyer of his team. How do you give the cherised Venum name to someone that bad at flying? This Super Nova was super skinny & not very co-ordinated. Ludxor & Discovery were the originals and did just fine as usual but this was not very good due to their partners even with the experienced rudos helping out. Vatos low blowed everyone to get DQ'ed.

Overall not a particularly interesting weekend of shows.

AAA 5/17/01 @ Toluca & 5/26/01 @ Nezahualcoyotl:

Oh boy... AAA in 2001. We've reached a time period where I can actually bash my favorite promotion ever. LOL It was a tough time to be a fan. The roster was abysmal for the most part, the booking was all-time stale for the most part & as a Canadian viewer getting the TV from the US... it was usually just crammed into an hour or less since AAA at this point had a show called 'Sin Limite' they were focusing on which aired late at night with more risque things. So any tapings would put the good stuff there & we got the leftovers which was rarely good and chopped to death. Sometimes the 45 minute shows would have 20 minutes of commercials. It was like watching a highlight package. So covering these two tapings quickly...

5/17 in Toluca only has 1 reported result (since nobody apparently taped Sin Limite there was no way to get other results if the magazines never printed them)...

Alan/Decnis/Billy Boy/Marabunta vs Angel Mortal/Mr. Condor/El Gallego/Gran Apache: *deep sigh* Marabunta vs his ex-teammates... in 2001. I get you do this while you are running the smaller arenas with the more hardcore fans since they know him and they know the Diabolicos vs Diabolicos feud but this just made for atrocious TV. This is how CMLL used to come off as when they had Ringo Mendoza vs Javier Cruz while AAA was sending out the best guys in the world. Then you toss in a really green Barrio Boys team who were the perfect guys CMLL fans could point and laugh at for their awful looks to go with their awful wrestling and it was a perfect storm of WHY IS THIS ON MY TV??? Marabunta/Condor did their feuding thing to setup a hair match. Bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad.

(Triplemania actually occured between these two tapings)

5/26 at Arena Neza had 3 matches air... nothing to get excited about though. The unaired matches included Barrios vs Bravos Del Norte (new gimmick for the Cirio Bros I believe) & an atomicos with Demon/Sagrada/Alebrije/Parka vs Pentagon III/Mascara Maligna/The Monster/Dr. Infierno. The latter might have been fun but we saw so many variations of it I'm fine missing out on one.

Los Vipers (Psicosis/Histeria II/Mosco II/Maniaco) vs Los Kick Boxers (names don't matter): Antonio Pena was a genius but also had some real stinker of ideas. The Kick Boxer stable was definitely one. Yes, not Kickboer. There was always a space between the KICK and the BOXER. They were led by... you guessed it. Except he would often disappear for periods of time which left the only real experienced wrestler as Toro Irisson which is NOT GOOD! The rest of the team were ACTUAL KICKBOXERS! WHAT IN THE FUCK?!?!?!?!? Legit they didn't know how to bump or even run the ropes. At one point here one of them gets whipped into the ropes and he just runs into chest first and stands there wondering what happens next. All the Vipers double and triple team moves are basically a shoot because they are teaming up to pick these stiffs up and slam them down. Just a total disaster. At least it was a hardcore match so we had weapons to break up the awful attempted wrestling. WHY ANTONIO PENA, WHY???

Marabunta vs Mr. Condor (Hair vs Hair): Feel the excitement! Or don't... whatever. The crowd definitely didn't so whatever the idea was to capitalize on running the small building didn't really work and if I remember right that was the end of this anyways. Both men bled with Marabunta bleeding buckets. Like 5 years before this these two had some awesome hair matches with the UWA Diabolicos but that was 5 years before... and in front of hot crowds. This was just a disgrace to the Diabolicos name. Poor Marabunta goes tecnico but fails in his attempt on revenge vs his former teammate... loses his hair and disappears. Such is life with the wacky world of AAA!

Latin Lover/Perro Aguayo Jr./Sangre Chicana vs Cibernetico/Abismo Negro/Electro Shock: Very edited so hard to tell the overall match but what aired was just much of nothing. I assume everyone was in relax mode after Triplemania. Imagine going from a bull fighting stadium in Acapulco less than 48 hours later to the small Arena Neza for TV. Finish was Cibernetico accidentally hitting Tirantes with a chain wrapped around his hand. Just a shitty finish to a shitty show.

AAA in 2001 = avoid! Very low time period.

CMLL 5/16/08:

Fun fact: Actually the 3rd Arena Mexico show of the week! They had a special Wednesday show for the newspaper Record so it was another hot week for the red hot CMLL. Crowd for this may have been effected by the surplus show as a Luchablog archive check notes the lack of people...

Unaired matches included Shockercito & Ultimo Dragoncito vs Pierrothito & Pequeno Violencia which looked good in photos & had an Ultimo Dragoncito crowd dive! Also a women's trios which had highlights air on Momentos and showed Amapola cheat to beat Dark Angel.

Blue Panther/La Mascara/Volador Jr. vs Damian 666/Mr. Aguila/Villano V: Great mix here led to a really fun match! Volador Jr. did an early springboard plancha onto the ramp to take out the rudos who not only had to catch him but also fight off Baby Richard who wasn't paying attention and trying to get in the way of the spot! Monito got involved a lot here including a dive onto Damian. Volador worked great with Aguila who still in top shape at this point. Villano V won this round over Panther. Just a super mix of 6 excellent guys who were just there to entertain. Loved it.

Heavy Metal/Negro Casas/Shocker vs Perro Aguayo Jr./Texano Jr./Terrible: A quick two fall match focusing on Heavy Metal/Perro Jr. feuding which... was... strange... since... they... weren't... before... this. In fact we had already announced Heavy Metal vs Toscano in a hair match the next Friday. SUSPICIOUS! But it was all cleared up post-match when Toscano ran in to attack Heavy Metal but Perrito was still hot about losing in 2 falls to a fake low blow so he attacked Heavy Metal too and then Toscano didn't appreciate the help so the rudos started brawling and in the end we got a 3 way hair match challenge. Luchablog speculates this was because CMLL was worried about the turnout and he may be right. The match ends with Toscano losing his hair to Heavy Metal who then loses his own hair to Perrito (& many other Perros del Mal members) in a cage match the following month. So Perrito in the 3 way really didn't effect anything in the long run.

Mistico/Dos Caras Jr./Hector Garza vs Ultimo Guerrero/Atlantis/Toscano: Standard main event with the Guerreros being the pinballs for the tecnicos but also getting their own fall in-between with their moves as UG always loves! Mistico/Toscano got paired up a lot here and I always liked watching them together. Mistico may not have enjoyed it as there were notably a couple times Toscano messed up catching him and he got hurt. Garza came up short on a moonsault bodyblock and seemed to hurt Atlantis' knee but doesn't seem like Atlantis missed any time. Tecnicos win but no La Mistica! Toscano got to take him out with a dive before the finish! Keeping the guy headlining next week strong!

A very enjoyable CMLL 90 minute TV show. All the charachters you'd come to love from CMLL in 2008 and an out of charachter angle by CMLL standards.

CMLL 5/17/13:

Opener of Molotov & Sensei (WTF did he go?) vs Akuma & Apocalipsis did not air. A true tragedy.

Pegasso/Starman/Triton vs Hooligan/Nitro/Skandalo: About as bland as you can get for a segunda with the older guys who have been around forever mixed in with the going nowhere dudes. Triton & Hooligan had a nice exchange at one pont which is really the only takeaway from this forgettable affair.

Delta/Rey Cometa/Sagrado vs Kraneo/Olimpico/Namajague: I guess the biggest statement of this show was THIS ended up being the match of the night. Mostly due to Kraneo who was legit carrying things. He caught a bunch of dives, took great bumps for the tecnicos & did funny comedy with Mije. That is... until the finish where he threw Mije so high up for the plancha that Mije couldn't control his landing and appeared to break his arm. :( I watch this match and think wow look at Olimpico on his last legs. He looks so sickly. And here we are in 2020 where sickly Olimpico still gets regular bookings and kept strong. Future co-head booker!

Fuego vs Vangelis: En Busca De Un Idolo 2013! The one nobody remembers! I wonder if that ties in with the winner being Vangelis? Generic opening round match with both guys getting in their stuff until Vangelis won with the safest Storm Cradle Driver variation you could imagine. To his credit he was working hard here & hadn't gotten fat yet.

Stuka Jr. vs Tiger: Super quick match. That was one of the things that differentiated this En Busca from 2012 and eventually 2014. Those years the matches were a priority with guys given all the time in the world to do what they wanted. Here it came off as a bunch of lightning matches right down to the formulaic layouts. This was just my dive, your dive, my move, your move, finish. Super disappointing considering the participants. At least Tiger's corkscrew over the ringpost was cool.

Rush/Thunder/Brazo De Plata vs Volador Jr./Averno/Mephisto: Not much to say here. Averno/Mephisto were in charge of bumping for Thunder & Porky. What a time to be alive for those two! Bad.

Diamante Azul/La Sombra/Maximo vs Negro Casas/Pierroth/Shinsuke Nakamura: Yes, CMLL was given one of the best wrestlers in the world at the time and had him team with Rush's awful father. Slight contrast in pairings depending on who was in the ring! The Azul/Pierroth stuff was laughably bad. Like watching two drug addicts play fight. Well... that's exactly what it was. Sombra/Nakamura stuff was good and the usual CMLL setup to a future title match with Sombra going over clean.

A largely forgettable show. CMLL picks up big time in June of 2013 but the road there was a long one.

AAA 5/17/13 @ Puebla:

From the days when AAA had 3 TV outlets! 3!!! Very short time period but we had the normal Galavision feed + the local affiliates would sometimes get an extra match since Galavision was a 90 minute time slot & they had 2 hours blocked off + this was the AAA Fusion era! Back when there was supposed to be a brand split but instead it just ended up a random TV show that went into repeat mode within a few months and then faded away. So we were treated to random opening matches with guys who were barely members of the AAA roster other than small C level shows. Strangely even with all that said... this had an unaired match! The Mirreyes (Alan Stone/Elegido/Toscano) vs Perros Del Mal (Daga/Halloween/Ricky Marvin) match did not make the cut anywhere! One has to wonder why...

Jinzo & Saturno vs Angel Mortal & Fresero Jr.: The definiton of the word random. Angel Mortal hadn't made TV in over a year but was a trainer for the company & I think local so that explains his presence. The other guys were probably used based on the little input TVC Deportes had since this ended up on the Fusion show. Fresero was an IWRG dude at the time. Saturno was a super talented skinny dude from Guadalajara who first came onto the scene in the CMLL mini's division in 2009 but then seemed to fall out with the locals tied into the CMLL GDL scene and went out on his own. He looked AMAZING in this match but the disappeared again. He's popped up over the years, always looking decent at bare minimum but his career never went anywhere for whatever reason. Jinzo would go onto become Ronnie/Raul Mendoza until his recent kidnapping. He also looked great here but if you asked me would I ever imagine him signed by WWE I'd say hell no. Such are the breaks in life. We'll never really know his true potential other than random Mexican signee. Very good match with the focus being on the tecnicos getting to look flashy. Angel Mortal was always a pro in making that happen.

Lucky Boy & Nino De Ebano vs Carta Brava Jr. & Eterno: I feel like often people forget how long Carta Brava Jr. had been running around AAA undercards before the entire Poder del Norte thing took off. Here he was another guy fresh from IWRG (which produced many of the good AAA guys) teaming with another fresh from IWRG guy who would have to wait 6 more years to end up with his new AAA gimmick of Abismo Negro. The tecnicos were two DTU kids making names for themselves as a team and always super fun to see make TV. They would get their short-lasting Venum/Ludor charachters later this year. This match was just a total fucking blast and way better than good opener. These rudos are just perfect for basing and the tecnicos were 100% on with everything they did. A must-see match!

Axel/Dinastia/Pimpinela Escarlata vs Argos/Mini Abismo Negro/Mamba: I forget exactly why Axel was hanging around at this time. I want to say AAA was trolling Santo based on a lawsuit. He made a couple of appearences before disappearing again and I don't think any appearence made the actual Galavision show. Argos is a funny guy. Much like his other family members (Argenis/Magnus) - they clearly have the basics down and could be fine luchadors if they stayed in their lane but they fancy themselves super talented underrated dudes so they try stuff they just aren't capable of and end up looking foolish. Decent match outside of the wonky Axel/Argos exchanges. Dinastia looked great and I really miss Mini Abismo who was one of the best minis ever.

Fabi Apache & La Jarochita vs Mari Apache & La Hechicera: Oh god. Very little memory of this. I can only imagine it must have been an all-time classic.

La Parka/Heavy Metal/Fenix vs Chessman/Parka Negra/Pentagon Jr.: This was Zorro-era Parka Negra so don't get your hopes up! Fenix/Pentagon carried the wrestling aspect of this match which wasn't bad but nothing blowaway either. Texano ended up running in to hit Heavy Metal with a guitar so the rudos could win. A fun re-watch to see early Fenix/Pentagon working together and formulating the stuff that would eventually blow crowds away at a small temple in Los Angeles.

Blue Demon Jr./Electro Shock/Mesias vs Texano Jr./Silver King/Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.: Ewwwwwww. This was no bueno. Very no bueno. They tried to wrestle & I think a brawl would have been better considering few of these guys can actually wrestle. Chessman did a run-in attacking Texano shockingly so the tecnicos got the win. Mesias/Electro Shock also teased problems. Very exciting AAA 2013 feuds!

Overall an interesting look into a time period where clearly AAA had different folks envisioning different things. Loaded undercard with youth & upper card full of very bad pairings for feuds & the run-in mentality. It would take some time to sort things out.

CMLL 5/16/14:

Hombre Bala Jr. & Starman vs Akuma & Apocalipsis: Minus his normal partner due to En Busca De Un Idolo I thought Bala actually looked good here working with Akuma. It was a mix of young guy/vet vs young guy/vet with very little mixing of the pairings which was good since it might have got clunky if they did. They stayed in their lane and had a very enjoyable opener with Bala shining.

Dark Angel/Princesa Sugeith/Silueta vs La Seductora/Princesa Blanca/Tiffany: Sugeith/Blanca were feuding here with Sugeith going tecnica just a couple weeks earlier. Standard match for the women. Dark Angel ate shit on a tope in the third fall. Blanca cheated to beat Sugeith. Really nothing else to say.

Final round robin matches for half the En Busca field...

Soberano Jr. vs Cavernario: Hell yeah! AWESOME! Soberano was not going through but still went all out with multiple dives and a really cool slingshot rana onto Cavernario who was standing on the apron taking him to the floor in a spot he hasn't done since and someone needs to steal! He also did a moonsault kneedrop which he could stand to bring back since it sets up his submission finisher nicely. Finish was craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy with Soberano doing a run-up-the-ropes plancha straight into the barricade and then Cavernario giving him the caveman splash for the countout victory. Standing ovation! How loaded was this tournament when Soberano Jr. was just a leftover of the first round knockouts?

Cachorro vs Super Halcon Jr.: As I noted previously... Halcon had a really disappointing tournament but he did not come to fuck around tonight. He was pushing Cachorro immediatly & even threw his jacket at him! LET'S GO! And go they did! Fucking awesome match! Just bomb after bomb. Sick topes from Cachorro... Halcon nasty DVD into the corner... Cachorro running power bomb ON THE FLOOR... Halcon with the Super Calo dive! Cachorro got the win but I think a definite moral victory to Halcon who just left us all wondering where was this effort in the 6 previous matches?

Diamante Azul/La Mascara/Stuka Jr. vs Terrible/Rey Bucanero/Vangelis: Really nothing to say here as this was in the era of La Mascara/Rush/Sombra teaming with the tecnicos but not being tecnicos so the matches were effected. You may hate the Relevos Incriebles concept that CMLL overdoes these days but if we weren't doing those we would get these and I'm not sure this is much of an improvement to be honest. Result doesn't matter. Waste of time.

Mascara Dorada/Titan/Valiente vs Mephisto/Kraneo/Ripper: What a weird combination of people that equaled a really good match! Dorada was on abso-fucking-lute FIRE in this! Just hitting moves so crisp. Even did an assisted rana from the ramp to Mephisto who was sitting on the ropes! Don't think he ever busted that one out again. There was a tecnico triple dive where Valiente looked like he smashed his head on the floor but continued on. They did the triple dive onto Kraneo... or should I say... Valiente did his tope... then Dorada LAUNCHED himself with the bullet tope to end all bullet topes and actually just demolished Kraneo who stayed down so Titan had nobody else to dive on as the spot usually calls for. Shockingly the rudos took this one for unexplainable reasons but the match itself was excellent.

Marco Corleone/Maximo/Volador Jr. vs Dragon Rojo Jr./Rey Escorpion/Shocker: The usual in-and-out as fast as possible main event. Tecnicos got in all their signature spots. Volador/Escorpion worked fantastic together. Tecs won cleanly to send everyone home happy and maybe balance out that previous match.

Overall it's En Busca season so of course this a show worth checking out! Just skip the La Mascara nonsense and try to imagine having to watching that 3 times a week in multiple matches spread over 2 years. YUCK.

AAA 5/17/14 @ Tapachula:

Music video includes handheld from the locals match which was not very good. A good lesson that not all dark matches featuring locals you've never heard of need to be seen!

Nino Hamburguesa/Ludxor/Venum vs Gran Apache/Carta Brava Jr./Fresero Jr.: This was actually a normal trios they ran around the horn at the time with the perfect set of rudos to carry those tecnicos. Very clipped up on TV but you got to see the big Cadets dives & Hamburguesa splash to win it for the tecnicos.

Pimpinela Escarlata/Fabi Apache/Jennifer Blake/Mascarita Sagrada 2000 vs Mamba/Sexy Star/Taya Valkyrie/Mini Absimo Negro: How is Mamba always in these matches and I forget he/she even existed? Ah Jennifer Blake! My favorite female Canadian wrestler down south. She had potential, especially after the tecnico turn. In another era (read: 2 or 3 years later) I'm sure she would have gotten swallowed up into the WWE system. Instead she faded out of AAA living in Taya's shadow & left the business to marry some band dude apparently. Her stories outside the ring will live on in our memories forever! Mascarita/Abismo did some fun stuff here as usual.

Psycho Circus vs Daga/Eterno/Steve Pain: What a mismatch of talented teams! Or so you'd think but they actually blended together for a pretty good match! I enjoyed Daga's somersault plancha to kick things off. They really shot it well. The usual clown formula was changed up a bit with the smaller rudos not there to stooge but actually give them a serious match. Texano did a run-in allowing the rudos to pull off the upset win.

Alan Stone/Elegido/Axel vs Texano Jr./Hijo Del Fantasma/Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.: Holy shit. That tecnico team is a who's who of guys Konnan wanted out of AAA immediatly. He got his wish! I have ot eat my words from above re: Axel never making Galavision because this definitely made Galavision. The rudos won (obviously) and there was nothing to this match outside of you - the viewer - watching it and just being amazed at the talent difference between the two teams. Yes, even MA2K Jr. was miles ahead of all three of those tecnicos.

Psycho Clown/Fenix/Cibernetico vs Chessman/Pentagon Jr./AVERNO: Written in caps because this was his debut as a surprise wrestler! I believe it was well known this was coming and who was coming along with him. For a debut he wasn't really put over super strong as Fenix went 50/50 with him and you could argue Fenix was 60/40. Fenix actually stole the show in this match if you ask me. He did his once and only second rope springboard into a double stomp on the floor (vs Penta... obviously) which is a spot you probably want to do just to do it and then retire it because it seems like an easy way to twist your ankle or worse. Unless you have no problems helping your landing by just actually stomping your opponent which seems not fair. No idea why Psycho was working twice. Maybe at one point they planned for the other surprise to be... well... keep reading. Finish was a long back-and-forth with Fenix/Averno where finally Averno barely managed to hang on and beat Fenix with the Devil Wings off the top rope. Literally right after his win the lights went off and we had a surprise appearence by........... HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED! It was Mistico. Or Sin Cara. Or Mystic 2.0. Or as we would soon know him... Myzteziz. He did the superman run-in doing pre-planned spots with Pentagon/Eterno/Steve Pain/Averno. Pretty big reaction but weird it would happen in tiny Tapachula of all places.

I remember that main event was pretty controversial afterwards as in the Observer recap there appeared to be a section straight from Konnan's mouth burying Averno & saying nobody knew who he was which clearly inaccurate and writing your own narrative. The TV footage itself shows people reacting to him & if I remember right someone even had his old mask on in the crowd since his debut was well known to be coming up. If he wasn't "over" by the end it was certainly the booking of the match not helping much as he was just a random third rudo. Either way... Konnan was unhappy and went to town on me for daring to counter his claim nobody knew Averno so that was one of our falling outs. The good thing about arguing with Konnan is he's so constantly high he barely ever remembers who he was arguing with by the time he sleeps it off.

Overall a decent show from a TINY arena. AAA was running a lot of those around this time. The main event angle tied in with Averno's debut is probably the most notable thing you should go back and watch but Clowns vs Daga/Eterno/Steve Pain wouldn't be a waste of your time.
